Workplace Hack: Leave a Trail of Productivity Breadcrumbs

It happens to all of us.

Sometimes, in the middle of a task, while I’m happily working away, a thought or idea will pop into my head. Before I forget it, I start researching, looking up information and wondering “how could I make this idea real?”

While these creative bursts are great, by the time I get back to my original task, I’ve often lost track of where I was and I have to spend a good few minutes trying to get back into the flow.

Sujan Patel, VP of Marketing at When I Work gives a Hansel and Gretel style solution for these distractions in this article for Search Engine Journal

“If it’s something that needs your immediate attention, then leave breadcrumbs for yourself that will lead you back to your original task.”

To follow this workplace hack, keep a notepad nearby or a notepad app open on your phone or computer, and write down your thoughts or ideas as they crop up.

If you really must tend to your distracting thought immediately, write down exactly what you were working on before you start researching. This will save you valuable minutes and help you get back in the flow when you’re ready to pick up where you left off.
