We all have busywork to do. Mind numbingly boring and easy tasks that we could do with our eyes closed.
While we often complain about busywork, research suggests that it could actually make us feel much happier and more productive than more complex tasks… A 2014 study by the University of California and Microsoft Research found that busywork left participants with a feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment. Because they hadn’t had to expend the mental energy required for more complex tasks, accomplishment wasn’t accompanied by any frustration or stress.
To follow this workplace hack, try creating a busywork list, full of mindless tasks you’ve been putting off. Whenever you start to feel stressed, uninspired, or like you’re not achieving anything, dig out your busywork list and pick a task to work on for a while.
