If you’re serious about becoming more productive, start meditating.
Meditating has been proven to help you concentrate, reduce stress, improve working memory and reduce emotional reactivity – all of which will help you to become more productive.
While there are clearly benefits to meditation, I don’t necessarily think the office is the place to do it. Our office can be busy and loud and as it’s open plan, there’s not really anywhere I’d particularly want to meditate.
So how can you get the benefits of meditating, without actually having to meditate?
Many people have suggested reading a novel as a form of meditation and I have to agree that it has a very similar effect.
I find that sitting down with a good book at work is a great way to escape reality, empty my mind and help me focus on what is going on here and now, much like meditation.
Make sure you choose the right book. Spending your lunch hour with War and Peace or Fifty Shades of Grey might not be especially soothing or appropriate! I like to relax with a book that’s both easy to read and makes me think. I find this lets me escape for a while and often gives me a fresh perspective to take back to my desk.
